Welcome to Steel Beach Accessories!
About Us: Steel Beach was started in 2004 when I was building F-14 models for VF-11 Red Rippers. I was using the 1/48 scale R/M kit and needed to convert it to an F-14B. A friend introduced me to resin casting so that I could make the appropriate parts. Some other modelers saw the parts and wanted them. I partnered with Sprue Brothers to sell my products, and it has grown from there. I sincerely thank all of you who purchased Steel Beach products and helped support us. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!
Our Goal: The main mission for SB is to provide modelers with quality, economical aftermarket items that make building easier. SB is a small (and I mean small...as in my basement!) operation, but I strive to provide you with items that you can use without too much hassle.
How the Name Came About: Being a Nav Air kind of guy, I naturally gravitated towards that theme when I was thinking up a name for the business. During safety stand downs on ships, they have "steel beach" parties up on deck with games and cookouts. I thought that this was fitting, since I wanted Steel Beach to be a fun, relaxed venture.
About Me: I've been building models for over 35 years, and I credit my dad for getting me started. My main focus is on modern Navy jets, especially the F-14 Tomcat. I contribute to Finescale Modeler, build for various museums, and have built for a number of Navy and Air Force fighter squadrons.
10/11/14 - Now that I'm settled into the new school year, I have a bit of time to work on some projects over the next couple months. Some will be done before others. :D Hopefully something on the list will interest you.
1/32 - KA-6D conversion for the Trumpeter kit
-- KA-6D conversion for the HB kit
-- A-6 hard intake/exhaust plugs
-- A-6 soft canvas intake covers
-- A-6 speed brakes (both perforated and solid)
-- EA-18G Growler conversion
-- F9F-8 undercarriage set (includes the main wheel wells and doors as one piece)
-- F9F-8 intake tunnels (not full run, but gives depth to the non-existent kit intakes)
-- F-14 standard gun vent (one piece) for Hasegawa kits
As always, thanks so much for your business and support. It is appreciated!
8/25/14 - The new school year is going well but taking up quite a bit of time. However, I do have a couple of new items in the pipeline that will be released in September. First up is an intake plug/reinforcement set for the new Kittyhawk 1/48 F9F-8T Cougar. They will also work for the single-seater when released. After that is a 1/48 scale US-2A/B conversion for the Kinetic S-2A kit. One new release that is now available is a better fitting NACA vent piece for the 1/48 scale Hasegawa F-14 kits.
6/30/14 - Almost all items have been restocked at Sprue Brothers. I made new molds for the early style A3D wheels. The 1/48 scale F-4 SEA masks are now available for both the Hasegawa kits and the Academy kits. The pattern is the same, but each mask set contains canopy masks.
6/24/14 - It's been awhile since I last updated the site. Summer vacation is here and I've been busy doing the honey-do list. I didn't realize how big my backyard fence was until I had to paint it! On the SB side of things, I've been casting to fill all existing items at Sprue Brothers so I can turn my full attention to new items. I'm also gearing up for my 10th Anniversary celebration. There are three special F-14 sets now available at Sprue Brothers. They contain just about everything I've made, both vinyl and resin, for the Monogram F-14 kits. They are items SBA10001, 10002, and 10003. They are a limited release, so get them while you can. More news in a few days of some special upcoming events!
5/9/14 - Sprue Brothers has a restock of about half the oos items. I'll be taking another restock up in the next couple of weeks.
Some new items that will be in an upcoming restock will be camo masks for the 1/48 Ju-87 Stuka and the F-4C/D Phantom II SEA schemes.
4/12/14 - The AD-5W sets sold out quite quickly. I'm not happy with the radome, so I'm going to rework the molds to see if I can make it easier to cast. I'm also working on getting the other Skyraider sets back in stock. Just another month and a half and it will be summer vacation. Yeah!
3/4/14 - I haven't had much time to casting. I've got spring break coming up and I'm hoping to have some time to restock all the items that have sold out. I do have the AD-5W sets ready. I'll bring those up with the restock.
2/3/14 - I seem to have misjudged how popular the AD-5Q and A-1E/AD-5N sets would be. I can't seem to get ahead on keeping them in stock. I'm going to make more molds to keep up with demand. I apologize for those that are waiting for them. I wish I had more time, but teaching a new grade level has taken up a bunch of time, along with family. I'll do my best to get more sets to Sprue Brothers.
1/21/14 - The Skyraider sets sold out pretty quickly, but I got restock to Sprue Brothers. They should be available shortly. I've also completed the AD-5W sets. They will be available in a couple of weeks. The masters for the sonobuoy/searchlight pod are done. I was going to cast the front portion in clear resin, but it's really difficult to work with. Instead, I"ve opted to have the front portion vac-formed. I'm in contact with a couple of guys who do that sort of thing. Once I get them the masters, they'll get the vac-forming done and send the parts back. Then I'll make them available.
1/5/14 - I hope everyone had a fun New Year. I've delivered a restock to Sprue Brothers which includes the new sets. They should be available for purchase by next week. I got a bonus day of Christmas vacation because of a snow day. Woohoo!!!! :-) Once all of the resin and vinyl items are back in stock, I'll start working on a couple of new projects. Some ideas I've got floating around are a 1/48 sonoybuoy/searchlight pod for the Skyraider, colored and clear nav lights for various aircxraft, 1/48 AD-5W conversion, and a 1/32 KA-6D conversion for the Trumpeter kit.
12/26/13 - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and holiday season. The RA-3B sets sold out within 24 hours, so I'm back to casting more. I'm working on some sets for the recently released Revell A-1E/AD-5N as well as a conversion to make the Academy F-4C into an F-4J.
12/5/13 - I'm working on a large restock for Sprue Bros. that I should have done by the middle part of December. It will include the new RA-3B conversion. I have tried to remaster the early bomber wheels for the Skywarrior, but I'm still not happy with them. I'll give another try and see if I can get them where I want them.
11/16/13 - I've finished up putting on the test cast parts for the RA-3B. You can see the results here.
11/8/13 - The A-4B/C conversion for the Hasegawa A-4E/F is now available at Sprue Brothers. You can order it here.
10/15/13 - I've started work on a couple of new projects. One is the RA-3B conversion. The other is an A-4B/C conversion for the 1/48 scale Hasegawa A-4E/F kit. With the unavailability of the Hasegawa A-4B/C kits, I thought this might be useful. I'm also working on getting the OOS items up to Sprue Brothers, but time is at a premium, so I cast when I can.
9/26/13 - There's a restock of a few Skywarrior items at Sprue Brothers. I'm working on getting more done. With impending release of the Caracal KA-3B sheet, I sent up a couple dozen KA-3B sets. Furball is coming out with a sheet that contains RA-3B's, so that conversion has gone to the front burner.
9/12/13 - I'm working on getting a restock done, especially of the Skywarrior parts. I'm making extras, so hopefully they will last a little longer than they have in the past. I'm looking at the restock being available in the later part of September.
8/26/13 - School is off to a great, but busy, start. I'm teaching a new grade level after 20 years in another, so the learning curve has been a bit steep. It's beginning to smooth out, though. On the resin front, the new items have been delivered to Sprue Brothers. I will need to take some time to get them listed here, but if you click on the Steel Beach button at Sprue Brothers, you'll get where you need to go. Some of the items may be OOS, but I'm working a bit at a time to get a large restock cast.
